Ken Griffey Jr. Steps Up to Bat to Help Raise Money for Florida Hospital's Centennial Campaign
ORLANDO - All-Star MVP and Cincinnati Reds baseball player Ken Griffey Jr. is hoping to hit a grand slam for Florida Hospital to build awareness and raise funds. In an exciting announcement recently, Griffey traded in his baseball uniform for a white lab coat as he was named Chairperson of Florida Hospital's Centennial Campaign.
To keep pace with the healthcare needs of the growing and aging population, Florida Hospital has determined that it will need $1.6 billion by 2010. That is why it is asking the Central Florida community for support.
Florida Hospital's Centennial Campaign officially kicked off in November 2006 at Florida Hospital's Annual Gala. The campaign will last through the end of 2008. At the end of 2006, Florida Hospital had raised approximately $65 million toward its goal of raising $100 million by 2008. Funds from the Centennial Campaign will help support a number of areas and initiatives throughout the hospital.

Orlando Regional Healthcare and South Lake Hospital Increase Altitude in Patient Care

ORLANDO - The sky is the limit to what Orlando Regional Healthcare will do to meet the needs of critically ill patients across Central Florida. The hospital recently added a second helicopter to expand The Air Care Team's air ambulance program. The second helicopter will be based at South Lake Hospital , providing residents in Lake County faster access to specialized care.
The new addition serves many functions including taking trauma and emergency services to the scene, improving access to a range of medical services including cardiology, neurology and orthopedics.
The second helicopter is a Bell 206 L4 LongRanger, considered one of the safest most used aircraft in the air medical industry. The pilots and medical crew have trained for numerous hours in the second helicopter to provide the same high standard of care it has provided to the community for more than 20 years.
The Air Care Team has provided medical services in a single helicopter, 24 hours a day, seven days a week since 1984. Since then, the Air Care Team has flown more than 19,000 patients with more than 1.2 million accident-free rescue missions. The Air Care Team averages 100 flights per month and services an area encompassing a 100-mile radius of Orlando . As the only hospital-based scene responder in Central Florida, the Air Care Team responds directly to scenes of accidents upon request of law enforcement and EMS personnel, as well as transports critically ill patients between hospitals.
Omniflight Helicopters Inc., which has been a leader in providing air medical transportation services to the health care industry for 45 years, provides the aviation services to Orlando Regional's Air Care Team. The two have worked together since the program began.

New Program From National Kidney Foundation To Educate And Empower Dialysis Patients

Mickey and Goofy will not be the only characters charming the crowds in Orlando this Spring. A brand new cast of cartoon characters will debut at the National Kidney Foundation's (NKF) Spring Clinical Meetings, held from April 10-14 in Orlando, as part of a major new patient education program from the NKF.
NKF members and other meeting attendees will receive a special preview of the program that the foundation will soon roll out to the entire dialysis community. The program is distinguished as the first "reality series" of, by, and for the community.
The centerpiece of the program is a comic-strip style "graphic novella" that visually tells the story of a group of patients and their healthcare team in a dialysis center similar to hundreds of centers across the U.S. The program follows these characters through the ups and downs of crises, conflicts, discoveries, and triumphs: the shock of being diagnosed with kidney disease, coping with the diagnosis and feelings about going on dialysis, role-reversals in family relationships, job-related stress, sticking with the kidney-healthy diet, managing multiple related conditions, dealing with personal issues and much more. The NKF will update the program six times per year-every other month-to spotlight new issues, and to continue to offer new tools to empower patients.
The program combines educational and empowering information in a range of media: posters for display on the walls of dialysis centers and physicians' offices; websites; print and online learning aids, teaching aids; and more. An Editorial Board comprised of patients, physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, technicians, and family members suggests key issues to address in the reality series.
