Orlando Orthopaedic Center’s Annual Cutting Edge Concepts in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Seminar

For the sixth consecutive year, the Orlando Orthopaedic Center hosted a continuing education program to benefit the University of Central Florida Student Athletic Trainers’ Organization (UCF SATO). The 2010 6th Annual Cutting Edge Concepts in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine seminar was hosted on the campus of Lake Brantley High School in February. And once again, attendance at this year’s program shattered the previous record held last year with over 500 in attendance.

The increased attendance also meant an increase in proceeds, and $2,250 was donated to the UCF SATO which will put the funds towards scholarships and assisting with the costs of sending athletic training students to meetings and conferences. Orlando Orthopaedic Center has now donated over $8,000 to UCF SATO over six years of hosting this seminar.

Florida Hospital Establishes Only Heart Transplant Program in Central Florida

Florida Hospital is launching the only heart transplant program in Central Florida. With the addition of two world class physicians to the Florida Hospital team, the first heart transplant in Central Florida is rapidly approaching. Cardiologist Dr. Barbara Czerska and Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Lawrence McBride have joined the Florida Hospital Transplant Center to lead the heart transplant program at Florida Hospital.

It is important for the Central Florida community to have a heart transplant program because it enables patients requiring a heart transplant to have that surgery performed close to home, so they don’t have to commute long distances to be close to heart transplant experts. Being close to the transplant center also allows patients to be nearby during the extended recovery process.

The Florida Hospital Transplant Center performed Central Florida’s first kidney transplant more than 35 years ago and is the area’s only transplant facility replacing multiple organs; the pancreas, the liver, the kidneys and now the heart. The legacy of the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and the Florida Hospital Transplant Center, make it possible for Florida Hospital to be the location of the first heart transplant performed in Central Florida.

Cardiologist Dr. Barbara Czerska will be supporting Dr. McBride and preparing potential transplant patients to receive a heart when it becomes available.

Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and Analiza, Inc. Add Large Volume of Compound Solubility Data to PubChem to Assist Future Drug Discovery Efforts

A collaborative project between Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona and Analiza, Inc. has yielded aqueous solubility data for over 20,000 compounds in the NIH Molecular Library within the first 90 days of screening and characterization. The early results of the analysis are proving to be enlightening, with almost 30% of the compounds screened having low solubility – a key factor in disqualifying compounds early in the drug development process, saving later stage time and expense. The reported measurements are now part of PubChem, the largest public database of bioactive molecules.

In total, over 58,000 compounds from the NIH Molecular Libraries Small Molecule Repository will be analyzed during the 12 month agreement. The project is the result of Sanford-Burnham receiving a $600,000 NIH research grant in late 2009. To date, such a large volume of solubility data, as related to chemical structure, has not been available for computational analysis. Knowing the solubility measurements of test compounds will help improve and streamline the early stages of molecular screening.   Ultimately, the data will assist future drug discovery efforts by allowing an investigator to select the concentration of each compound to test within their biological studies.

Central Florida Doctor, Michael W. Steppie, MD, To Be On Discovery Health- Mystery Diagnosis With His Rarely Diagnosed CTX Disorder Case

ORLANDO- Michael W. Steppie, MD, President and Medical Director of Associates In Dermatology, will appear on Discovery Channel’s Health- Mystery Diagnosis. Episode 808- The Girl Who Was Covered With Bumps will start airing April 5.

Cerebrotendinous Xanthomatosis (CTX) is a progressive genetic fat (lipid) storage disorder affecting the central nervous system and the skin. People with this disorder are unable to produce the enzyme required to break down certain fats; especially cholesterol. These fats then accumulate and form nodules (Xanthomas) just under the skin. Nodules can also accumulate in the fatty substance that insulates and protects the nerves, disrupting nerve signaling in the brain. It is estimated that there are over 27,000 people in the US who have CTX and have been misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Because of Dr. Steppie and others the medicine used to treat CTX was approved by the FDA in February 2010.

Dr. Steppie is board certified in Dermatology and Internal Medicine. He specializes in skin cancer and is a MOHS Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgeon. He has been honored with the distinguished American Medical Association Physician Recognition Award numerous times and was voted one of America’s Top Physicians for 2008.

ImaCor Introduces New Device

ImaCor, Inc. has recently introduced a new device that will assist in the management of hemodynamically unstable patients in the ICU and perioperative situations. The ClariTEE™ probe is a miniaturized, disposable transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probe that can be used in the assessment and management of cardiac function, intravascular volume status, and the presence of tamponade.

Unlike conventional TEE probes which are large in diameter and require anesthesia or sedation, the ClariTEE probe is the size of a naso-gastric tube and can be placed in a non-sedated patient. Due to its small size the ClariTEE™ probe that can be left in a patient for up to 72 hours. Whereas conventional TEE probes provide detailed cardiac information at that point in time, the smaller sized ClariTEE probe is designed to remain indwelling for an extended period of time allowing critical care physicians to monitor a patient’s response to medical interventions such as volume resuscitation and administration of vasoactive agents.

ImaCor has successfully completed a clinical trial and is FDA cleared in the United States and has recently successfully completed evaluations at several major medical centers in the United States, and has only recently started commercializing the system.
