Florida Hospital First in Central Florida to Offer the Newest Technology in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Florida Hospital Orlando and Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital, are the only two locations in Central Florida to offer the new PEM Flex Solo II.
The Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) scanner is a specialized form of nuclear medicine medical imaging used specifically for imaging of the breasts. The PEM scanner isolates the breasts and focuses its imaging capabilities to a specific area, which produces a very sharp, detailed image of any abnormal tissue, such as cancerous tumors. With PEM, doctors are able to see cancers as small as 2 millimeters, about the width of a grain of rice.
Dr. Dawn Sokol Joins Nemours Division Of Infectious Disease
Nemours Childrens Clinic, a division of one of the nations largest childrens health systems, recently announced that Dawn M. Sokol, M.D. joined the Division of Infectious Disease in Central Florida. As a pediatric infectious disease physician, Dr. Sokol will treat children with fevers, rashes, abscesses, pediatric HIV/AIDS, pneumonia, tuberculosis, Lyme disease and osteomyelitis, among others. Dr. Sokol joins Dr. Catherine Lamprecht, Nemours division chief and winner of the Faculty Award from Arnold Palmer Hospital resident staff, at the Orlando Childrens Clinic to provide these critical services for children. Dr. Sokol comes to Nemours from her position with the Ochsner Foundation Hospital and Clinic in New Orleans, LA, where she served as the section head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Her post at Tulane University School of Medicine as a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics since 1998, will also positively benefit the community as we move toward the future. She earned her medical doctorate from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and is board certified in pediatric infectious diseases by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Physicians United Plan Changes Pharmacy Benefit Managers
POLK COUNTY — Physicians United Plan is pleased to announce it will be changing Pharmacy Benefit Managers to Partners Rx Management and WellPoint. This change will affect nearly 2,500 Medicare members in Polk County.
This change does require that a new Physicians United Plan ID card be presented for proper billing and benefit verification. No insurance benefit changes are taking place. New member ID cards were sent to all members on June 21, 2007.

Florida Hospital Named One of America’s Best Hospitals
For the ninth consecutive year, Florida Hospital has been recognized in the U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Hospitals” issue that went on newsstands July 16. Florida Hospital made the list for its Endocrinology (Diabetes) services and is the only hospital in Central Florida to be named.
Out of the 5,189 hospitals that were evaluated for this list, only 176 hospitals, including Florida Hospital, scored high enough to be listed this year.
Florida Hospital is listed in the Endocrinology (Diabetes) category for its services in this area.
Dr. Nicholaas M. Grobler Joins Pulmonary Care of Central Florida
Pulmonary Care of Central Florida recently welcomed Nicolaas M. Grobler, MD who has joined Sigfredo Aldarondo, MD in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine practice in Winter Park, FL.
Dr. Grobler graduated Medical School from the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria. He served his internship in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Yale University/Greenwich Hospital Program in Greenwich. He then went on to graduate from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons/St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City with a specialty in Pulmonary and Critical Care.
Florida Hospital Soars to New Heights with Announcement of Unprecedented Gift
In a special ceremony recently on the banks of Lake Estelle, Florida Hospital released five doves symbolizing the spirit of healing and hope that is embodied in a significant gift from noted developer, philanthropist, and Central Floridian Alan H. Ginsburg and the Ginsburg Family Foundation.
Florida Hospital announced that Alan H. Ginsburg and the Ginsburg Family Foundation have given a $20 million gift to Florida Hospital, the largest gift in the hospital’s history. The gift will support the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute that will be located inside the new patient tower at Florida Hospital Orlando.
In honor of this gift, the new 15-story tower currently under construction at Florida Hospital Orlando will be known as the Ginsburg Tower. The tower will be the tallest hospital building in Florida.
When completed in Fall 2008, the Ginsburg Tower will house the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and the most advanced cardiovascular technology available, including one of the largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country, cardiac diagnostics, cardiac rehabilitation, electrocardiography, and cardiac research.
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando Expands its Nuclear Medicine Team
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando recently formed a new team of nuclear medicine physicians to enhance diagnostic nuclear medicine services for cancer patients. The Nuclear Medicine department includes Medical Director Richard Lovas, MD, and Nuclear Medicine Physicians Luke Bolek, MD, Mary Hart, MD, and Robert McDonald, MD.
Dr. Lovas has been working with Orlando Regional Healthcare since the mid-1980s as a staff pathologist and nuclear medicine physician. Prior to joining Orlando Regional, Dr. Lovas worked in Nuclear Medicine at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bolek received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He completed his residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Mich., where he served as chief resident of Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Hart most recently worked in the Nuclear Medicine department of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Fla., where she was partner of Clearwater Imaging Associates.
Rounding out the team is Robert McDonald, MD. He joined the center from the Southwest Florida Regional Medical Center & Radiology Regional Center in Fort Myers, Fla., where he was medical director of Nuclear Medicine.
Aloma Urgent Care Cuts Its Ribbon With Mayor David C. Strong
WINTER PARK — Winter Park’s newest urgent care facility, Aloma Urgent Care, celebrated its grand opening on May 17th with the help of Mayor David C. Strong. Many local doctors also attended the grand opening which featured casino games, cocktails, hors d’ourves and prizes. The ribbon was cut and Aloma Urgent Care opened its doors with a promise that has not gone unnoticed —“Be seen in 15 minutes or less.” This message is sure to hit home with anyone who has suffered painfully long waits in other urgent care centers or in the emergency room.
