ORMC First in Orlando to Use New Heart Stent

ORLANDO  — Orlando Regional Medical Center is the first hospital in Orlando to use the PROMUS™ Everolimus-Eluting Coronary Stent − the newest drug-coated stent from Boston Scientific Corporation − to treat heart disease, the nation’s No. 1 cause of death.  Recently approved by the FDA, the PROMUS Stent has been used outside the United States for over two years.
“Bringing the most advanced medical technologies to our community directly supports our mission to provide outstanding cardiac care to patients,” said Robert P. Dalton, interventional cardiologist and medical director of ORMC Cardiac Cath Lab. “Early adoption of the PROMUS Stent strengthens our commitment to offer advanced treatments to patients in Greater Orlando and our surrounding communities. We anticipate improved, longer lasting results with the new stent.”

While the use of stents, one of the most significant technology innovations to treat heart disease, is a well-established practice, the new stent features a unique design. The PROMUS Stent is in a new class of drug-coated heart stents made from cobalt chromium. Cobalt chromium allows for thinner metal struts that make the stent more flexible and easier for doctors to implant.

“With the addition of the PROMUS Stent, we’re giving doctors even more options in drug coatings, stent size and strut design so they can customize treatment to individual patient needs,” said Hank Kucheman, president of Boston Scientific’s Interventional Cardiology business. “With excellent clinical results and positive patient outcomes in Europe, we’re excited to bring the PROMUS Stent to U.S. facilities that provide best-in-class patient care.”

Florida Hospital Applies to Expand Transplant Program to Include Heart and Lung Transplants

Orlando — Florida Hospital announced recenlty that it has filed the Certificate of Need (CON) requests with the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) in Tallahassee, Fla., to establish a Cardiothoracic Transplant Program at its Orlando campus.

“The establishment of these transplant services is a natural extension of our transplant, cardiac, and thoracic programs,” said Randy Haffner, administrator of Florida Hospital Orlando. “Our proven excellence over our 35-year transplant history would allow us to bring that same expertise to heart and lung transplants and continue providing life-saving transplants to patients right here where they live.”

A decision by AHCA on the program that would include heart and lung transplant services is due on Aug. 22.  Florida Hospital estimates the heart and lung transplant services could be operational within 12 months once CON approval is granted.

These two solid organ services would add to the existing transplant services currently performed at Florida Hospital Orlando, which includes kidney, pancreas, liver, and bone marrow.

Florida Hospital is currently building a 15-story patient tower that will house the Florida Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and provide the infrastructure and technology for the Cardiovascular Program.   The Ginsburg Tower will open in November 2008, when Florida Hospital marks its 100th year of service to the community.

Nemours Unveils Children’s Hospital Master Site Plan And Expert Design Team

ORLANDO — Nemours, one of the nation’s leading children’s health systems, recenlty unveiled the Nemours Children’s Hospital (NCH) master site plan for its health care campus that will be located in the Lake Nona medical city. After months of collaboration and input on how to best serve children’s needs in central Florida, Nemours, along with several other partners, has established the basic footprint for what will be an innovative and integrated destination for pediatric health care.

Nemours also announced that it has formed a team to design the hospital and guide the remaining process to create the Nemours model of care. The design team includes a group of more than 150 internal and external health care business experts, clinicians, architects and individuals that are collaborating to provide critical insight into pediatric care delivery for the new health system.

Jeffrey E. Green, Nemours vice president and chief administrative officer - Florida, serves as the design team’s project executive. He is responsible for overseeing and providing strategic direction for Nemours Children’s Hospital. Green said, “We have selected a dynamic team of experts that will lead us in designing and building a top-tier enterprise committed to service and quality. Together, we have the honor and challenge of creating an integrated pediatric health care system for the future.”

In keeping with Nemours’ commitment to excellence, the primary facility design team is a partnership of two of the most highly recognized firms in health care architecture and pediatric design. Perkins+Will, located in Boston, has worked with 85 of the top 100 academic medical centers and universities, and completed projects for more than 500 medical institutions in the United States as well as overseas. This firm is highly regarded as a global leader in the industry. The co-designers from Atlanta -- Stanley Beaman & Sears, specialize in award-winning interiors and architectural facilities for children. The company has a reputation for designing children’s hospitals and outpatient centers that are both memorable and unique. Additionally,
Nemours has engaged IDEO, a nationally renowned innovation and design firm to work with the facility design team. IDEO will focus on patient satisfaction, specifically on the entry and exit experience of patients and families.

Nemours recently chose Skanska USA Building Inc. as the construction manager that will oversee the construction process of the project. This firm has tremendous international and national experience building truly innovative structures, and the central Florida team brings strong health care facility experience to the project. Not only will the hospital be patient and family-friendly, it will incorporate high performance, environmentally friendly and sustainable design concepts into the hospital so that the facility can achieve the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification. Skanska oversaw construction on the Parrish Healthcare Center in Port St. John in 2004, which became the first outpatient facility to be awarded LEED® Silver green building certification in Florida.

A major focus of the design process is centered on the models of care that NCH will provide. Judy Wall, MD, medical director for Nemours Children’s Clinic in Orlando and team lead on patient care, said, “We are carefully examining the way we provide care and how others in the industry are using best practices. Together with our partners, we are creating a system of care that focuses on the whole child and systematically follows the patients and families through a continuum of both outpatient and inpatient care.” In order to accomplish this massive undertaking, Nemours has retained the services of multiple patient care experts including Bowen & Briggs. This group has spent the last several months reviewing best practices for patient care as well as nursing practices and recruitment.

Nemours will break ground on its integrated pediatric health system in 2009, allowing enough time for the organization to comfortably fulfill its Certificate of Need (CON) requirements to the state. The health system plans to open its doors to children and families in 2012.
