Nemours Receives Approval From The State Of Florida

ORLANDO — Recently, the State of Floridas Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) approved Nemours third Certificate of Need (CON) application to develop a pediatric health care system in Central Florida.
This hospital will do much to establish Central Florida as a leading health care region in the country. The synergies achieved by cooperation with the medical school at the University of Central Florida and the researchers at the Burnham Institute will be truly revolutionary.

Aloma Urgent Care Cuts its Ribbon with Mayor

WINTER PARK — Winter Park’s newest urgent care facility, Aloma Urgent Care, celebrated its grand opening on May 17th with the help of Mayor David C. Strong. Many local doctors also attended the grand opening which featured casino games, cocktails, hors d’ourves and prizes. The ribbon was cut and Aloma Urgent Care opened its doors with a promise that has not gone unnoticed — “Be seen in 15 minutes or less.” This message is sure to hit home with anyone who has suffered painfully long waits in other urgent care centers or in the emergency room.

Florida Hospital Performs First Liver Transplant in Greater Orlando Area

ORLANDO — Recently, the first patient to undergo a liver transplant in the greater Orlando area went home, after having surgery at Florida Hospital Orlando last week. The 59-year-old man underwent surgery just days after the Florida Hospital Transplant Center officially activated its liver transplant program.

In April 2007, Florida Hospital officially announced its expansion of services to include liver and kidney-pancreas transplants. Since 1973, its transplant program has performed more than 2,000 kidney transplants.

Panamanian Neurosurgeon Florida Hospital Celebration Health

CELEBRATION — People in the Republic of Panama suffering from a tumor inside the dural sac, may now be able to undergo a procedure to have the tumor removed and their neck stabilized with small surgical screws, thanks in part to a neurosurgeon at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Neurosurgeon Carlos Briceo, MD, lives in Panama and though he had been trained on the delicate procedure, he had never observed a case. Recently, he came to Florida Hospital Celebration Health to watch Neurosurgeon Ali Chahlavi remove an intradural tumor and stabilize the neck with small surgical screws.
When Dr. Briceo returns to Panama, he will be the first neurosurgeon in his country to offer the technique.

Commerce Park Investments Breaks Ground on Medical Center

Physicians Imaging and a Lake County based internal medicine group has contracted with Commerce Park Investments for 12,720 square feet of a 19,800 square foot medical office building to be constructed in the newly developed Lake Town Center business center located between County Road 19A and Eudora Road in Mount Dora. Upon completion of Lake Town Center, the business park will consist of four buildings totaling 75,000 square feet.

Central Florida Elite & Three Dog Night Unite To Build The Community’s Only Hospice House

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS — The 3rd Annual Bohemian Ball benefiting Hospice of the Comforter, the only non-profit hospice serving Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties, will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, Saturday, August 18th, at 6:30 p.m. and will feature entertainment by Three Dog Night. The event, hosted by Winter Park law firm Jill S. Schwartz and Associates, P.A., will draw more than 700 attendees and is expected to raise more than $500,000.

In addition to classic hits performed by Three Dog Night, Bohemian Ball guests will be dazzled by a variety of unique gifts from one-of-a-kind jewelry to sports memorabilia and 5-star dinner parties during the silent auction hosted by Artsy Auctions. Later, while enjoying an elegant four-course meal, guests will have an opportunity to make a difference for the Hospice House by bidding on many fantastic trips offered during the live auction hosted by the energetic American Fundraising Auctions. Trips will include visits to Majorca, Argentina, Canyon Ranch Resort, and many more.

Proceeds from the gala will benefit the construction of Hospice of the Comforter’s Hospice House, Central Florida’s only free-standing inpatient facility. Located in Altamonte Springs, the Hospice House anticipates opening its doors to the community in January of 2008.

Physicians United Plan Adds Munroe Regional Medical Center to Ocala Medicare Provider Network

OCALA — Physicians United Plan is broadening its presence throughout Central Florida with the recent addition of Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla. Effective immediately, Physicians United Plan members will add this hospital to the constantly expanding provider directory offered by the plan.

Headquartered in Central Florida, Physicians United Plan is a Medicare Advantage Coordinated Care Plan with Prescription Drug coverage (MA-PD) contracted with Medicare to provide health care to Medicare Beneficiaries. The plan’s 2007 expanded service area includes the following counties: Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Marion Sumter and Polk. Local offices are located in Winter Haven and Orlando, Fla.

Dr. Mitchell Austin Joins Nemours Division Of Otolaryngology

ORLANDO — Nemours Childrens Clinic recently announced that Mitchell Byrne Austin, MD has joined the Division of Pediatric otolaryngology.


Dr. Austin will be joining Dr. David Moser at the Orlando Childrens Clinic to provide this specialized care for children in the metropolitan area.


Dr. Austin comes to Nemours from his current position with the Medical College of Georgia where he has worked since 2000 as director of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology and associate professor. He received his subspecialty training in pediatric otolaryngology at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia and was later an assistant professor at the institution.
