"The Exchange At Savannah Park" Construction Is Under Way
With an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 12, 2009, Longwood, Florida developer Kilcarraig Services, LLC celebrated construction of "The Offices at Savannah Park," a Class-A professional office building located in "The Exchange at Savannah Park", a town center located within the Savannah Park planned development. The elegant, southern-style building is one of two 20,000 sf professional office buildings planned by Kilcarraig, and constructed by Cotter Ryan Construction, Inc. of Longwood. Seventy attendees were introduced to Savannah Park, which is located on International Parkway, one mile North of 46A, in the Heathrow area. Savannah Park consists of 156 town homes under construction by Ashton Woods, and includes the town center, which will offer restaurants, boutique style retail shops, professional offices, and sixty professional apartments above the retail. The town center is being developed by the Savannah Meridian Acquisition Group, LLC, located in Atlanta.
Scott Ryan, President of Kilcarraig Services, LLC, and Cotter Ryan Construction, Inc., and his wife, Longwood attorney Kelly Thomas Ryan, feel the time is right to move forward with this new product. Both believe there is a market for Class A professional space in the north Heathrow corridor, a prime location for physicians, attorneys and other business professionals to conveniently serve multiple counties. The development's proximity to the planned International Parkway / 417 interchange makes these buildings a first choice for new, expanding or re-locating businesses or firms. The first shell building is scheduled to be completed in April 2009, with tenant improvements commencing at that time. Kilcarraig Services, LLC, and Cotter Ryan Construction, Inc. will occupy 5,000 sq ft of the first building for their new corporate offices.
Orlando Orthopaedic Center's 2009 5th Annual Cutting Edge Concepts in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Seminar
For the fifth consecutive year, the Orlando Orthopaedic Center hosted a continuing education program to benefit the University of Central Florida Student Athletic Trainers' Organization (UCF SATO). The 2009 5th Annual Cutting Edge Concepts in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine seminar was hosted on the campus of Lake Brantley High School on January 31, 2009. And once again, attendance at this year's program shattered the previous record held last year.
Randy Schwartzberg, MD Orthopaedic Surgeon for Orlando Orthopaedic Center feels that the continued growth in popularity of the program can be attributed to its primary objective. "Our goal is to deliver a high-quality program for an affordable fee while raising funds for future athletic trainers, so as long as we keep doing that, more and more folks will want to attend our program," says Dr. Schwartzberg.
Health Central Foundation's $11 Million Support of School Nurse Program Recognized by Orange County School Board
ORLANDO — Health Central Foundation received recognition for its 15-year financial support of the School Nurse Program, which places registered nurses in Orange County elementary, middle, and high school clinics. Christine Moore, District 7 Orange County School Board member, on February 3, 2009 recognized Health Central Foundation for providing $11 million dollars in support of the program since its inception in 1994.
Because of the funding provided by the partnership of Health Central Foundation and OCPS, 22 schools are able to provide registered nurses to attend to the primary healthcare needs of students. During the 2007-2008 school year, students visited their school nurse with 154,452 clinic visits, and 38,781 doses of medication were dispensed by Health Central registered nurses. The School Nurse Program was created to provide access to medical care for students who might otherwise be unable to afford it—in many cases the school nurse is the only healthcare provider students have.
Keeping children in class is an added benefit of the program, as nurses may dispense medication or administer first aid treatment and send students back to class, rather than sending them home. Students with serious medical issues, such as insulin-dependent diabetes, are able to attend classes with their peers due to the presence of a registered nurse who can dispense insulin and monitor blood sugar levels. In addition to providing nurses, the School Nurse Program also stocks the clinic with necessary medical supplies. The annual cost of providing a nurse for one school is $45,000.

Patients Will Experience a New Type of Emergency Room (ER)
VOLUSIA AND FLAGLER COUNTIES — Emergency rooms at five Florida Hospital campuses (DeLand, Fish Memorial, Flagler, Oceanside and Ormond Memorial) are reinventing the way they provide medical treatment. When you walk through the door, your emergency care will begin within five minutes. That's the concept behind the "No-Wait ER"
Nearly 146,000 people in Volusia and Flagler counties visited a Florida Hospital emergency room last year, making the "No-Wait ER" sound like a daunting task. The administrators, medical directors and emergency department leadership are monitoring performance on a daily basis, working to fine-tune the process to meet community needs.
The "No-Wait ER" is focused on shortening patient treatment times. It is measured when a patient enters the emergency room to when a patient begins assessment, with a goal of five minutes or less. That means no more long waits in emergency room lobbies.
Each campus is working on a unique process for care delivery, and emergency department staff will continue to place a higher priority on caring for our sickest patients first, which may mean from time to time the "No-Wait ER" will be missed. Service recovery plans are in place for each campus.
Florida Hospital DeLand Combines Kinesio Taping and Lymphedema Treatment
DELAND — What do David Beckham, Lance Armstrong, 2008 Olympics and Lymphedema patients have in common? Kinesio Taping.
Lymphedema, which affects an estimated 3 million Americans, is abnormal swelling of the tissues that occurs when the lymphatic system fails to develop properly, or has been damaged or surgically altered, such as during breast cancer treatment. Most commonly found in arms or legs, lymphedema also affects the trunk, breast, abdomen, neck, head and or genitals.
"We offer a comprehensive program for lymphedema management, including Kinesio Taping," said Nicole
Scheiman, a certified lymphedema and Kinesio Taping occupational therapist. "Though lymphedema is incurable, it is readily treatable. Kinesio Taping is an effective addition to hands-on lymphedema treatment and compressive therapy."
Kinesio Taping® is a treatment utilizing highly specialized elastic tape, which has proven to be helpful in reducing localized swelling associated with surgery, sports injuries, acute trauma and lymphedema.
The tape was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase and has taken professional sports by storm as athletes use the tape to give their muscles more elasticity. It's been seen on athletes such as David Beckham and Lance Armstrong, as well as throughout the 2008 Olympics; however, Kinesio Taping is also sweeping the lymphedema world as an effective and exciting modality that compliments other "standard" treatments.
