Florida Hospital DeLand Announces New Chief Operating Officer
DeLand — Florida Hospital DeLand announces Randy Surber as the new Chief Operation Officer (COO).
Surber comes to Florida Hospital DeLand with 12 years of executive experience in the Adventist Health System (AHS) and over 20 years in health care.
As COO, Surber is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the hospital. He will coordinate the operations of several departments and is accountable with ensuring compliance with the mission of Florida Hospital DeLand, as well as the regulatory guidelines in order to carry out the strategic objectives of the organization.
Surber is a graduate of Southern University and holds a Masters of Business Administration from Bristol University and a Masters of Education from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Eye Physicians of Central Florida Welcomes Ophthalmologist and Cornea Specialist Lynda Z. Kleiman, M.D.
LONGWOOD — Eye Physicians of Central Florida is pleased to announce that ophthalmologist and cornea specialist Lynda Z. Kleiman, M.D., has joined the practice and will see patients in the Longwood and Winter Park offices. Dr. Kleiman joins David B. Auerbach, D.O., and Victor B. Thomas, M.D., in providing general ophthalmology care and cataract surgery. In addition, she has expertise in diseases of the cornea — the clear, round, "window" of tissue that allows light to enter the front of the eye — including infection and injury. Dr. Kleiman also specializes in surgery of the cornea, including the latest corneal transplant techniques.
Board-certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Dr. Kleiman served as an assistant professor of clinical ophthalmology from 2005 to 2009 at Columbia Universityís Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute in New York where she also completed a fellowship in cornea and external disease. She served her residency in ophthalmology at NYU Medical Center/Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and her internship at Mount Sinai School of Medicine/Cabrini Medical Center also in New York. Dr. Kleiman earned her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine.
In New York, Dr. Kleiman trained and worked alongside some of the leaders in her field. She split her time between teaching and providing patient care. In Orlando, Dr. Kleiman will focus primarily on caring for patients and is also involved with the University of Central Floridaís College of Medicine.
Florida Hospital Cancer Institute Physician Published for Lung Cancer Clinical Trial
ORLANDO — Dr. Lee Zehngebot, director of the clinical research program at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute, was recently published in Annals of Oncology for his research on a lung cancer clinical trial at FHCI. Annals of Oncology is a leading scientific journal that provides information about medical oncology and research on how to manage malignant diseases.
This clinical trial conducted at FHCI studied how patients with lung cancer reacted to three drugs administered during two different time intervals. The clinical drugs used showed greater response rates than previously researched.
Dr. Zehngebot received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also completed his fellowship in hematology and oncology. He completed his residency at the Bronx Municipal Hospital in Bronx, NY. Prior to joining FHCI, Dr. Zehngebot was an assistant professor at Albany Medical in NY. He currently has a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at Duke University in Durham, NC and is a member of prestigious medical organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, Florida Medical Association and Florida Society of Clinical Oncologists. Dr. Zehngebot is board certified in internal medicine and oncology.
Many hospitals, physicians and patients participate in FDA-regulated clinical trials. In 2009, FHCI will enroll more than 170 patients in clinical trials, enabling these patients to receive cutting-edge cancer therapies. FHCI currently has more than 100 ongoing clinical trials. Florida Hospital Cancer Institute was recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology as one of 12 community oncology programs in the country committed to be awarded the Clinical Trial Participation Award in 2006.
According to National Cancer Institute statistics, approximately 219,440 new cases of lung cancer are detected in the United States annually. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women, with more annual fatalities than other cancers such as breast, prostate and colon combined. To raise awareness and funding for research on this disease, November has been designated Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
Orange County Health Department Expands Services In Hiv Community
ORLANDO — The Orange County Health Department (OCHD) has expanded its services to include the Help Understand and Guide Me Program (HUG–Me), a nationally recognized model program and leader in care for the HIV community. Beginning October 1, 2009, HUG-Me became a part of the Orange County Health Department and will continue to provide comprehensive health needs to the HIV community.
The HUG-Me program is unique in that HIV-positive individuals are hired to fill vacant positions whenever possible and meets the needs of the HIV infected, affected, and at-risk populations in the community by providing leadership in quality care, prevention and early intervention services. A diversified, culturally-sensitive, and comprehensive network of healthcare, these services include: advocacy, co-located case management, medical evaluations and clinical care, mental health counseling, nutritional counseling, pharmacy, prevention of peri-natal transmission, referrals, research participation, screenings and support groups.
The mental health component of HUG-Me is located at the Howard Phillips Center for Children & Families, creating a partnership and collaboration between the Orange County Health Department and the Howard Phillips Center.
HUG-Me is the primary source of care for infants, children, youth, women, and families infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS in Central Florida, and currently serves residents of Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake, St. Lucie and Brevard counties. Over the years this program has been very successful in limiting transmission from pregnant mother to unborn child; it has served more than 450 HIV-infected pregnant women and continues to treat an average of 54 pregnant women each year.
HUG-Me is dedicated to outreach and education efforts to prevent the further spread of HIV in the community, and this dedication will continue as it becomes a part of the Orange County Health Department family.

Colonial Medical Supplies Holds Grand Opening
Colonial Medical Supplies held a Grand Opening for a new retail showroom across from the Florida Hospital at Altamonte Springs in late September. The new showroom is an addition to the 3 other locations at Downtown Orlando, Kissimmee and Lady Lake.
The 15,000-square-foot superstore features a wide variety of DME products. The showroom consists of a main floor and 5 smaller rooms each highlighting a different category of products. The smaller rooms are set up to feature: Custom manual and power wheelchair; Hospital room equipment including a hospital bed and custom made wood headboard and footboard covers for it; Mastectomy; Oxygen and CPAP room and Walkers, canes and wheelchairs room. The main floor displays Lift chairs, Bathroom safety equipment, Walkers and Scooters, and has different sections displaying Woundcare, Enteral, Urological and Incontinence supplies, Compression stockings, Foot care, hospital grade and premium grade Orthotics.

Physician Assistant Joins Florida Hospital DeLand
DeLand — Suzanne Villalobos, PA -C has joined the staff of Florida Hospital DeLand and the office of John Hill, MD, a family practice physician.
Villalobos is a licensed physician assistant and dietitian. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Some of the services she will provide include history and physical exams, assessments, ordering diagnostics and evaluating referrals.
Villalobos received her Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree at the University of Florida, following undergraduate work in dietetics at Purdue University. She has continued her medical education with multiple classes, including Asthma and COPD, ADHD, Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, and Current Guidelines for Antibiotics.
Currently, Villalobos is the founder and president of West Volusia Physician Extender Association. She also belongs to the American Association of Physician Assistants, Florida Academy of Physician of Physician Assistants, and American Dietetic Association.
Villalobos actively volunteers for the Good Samaritan Health Clinic and is a Pop Warner cheerleading coach.
Florida Hospital - Burnham Researcher Elected Councilor of Leading Scientific Society for Obesity
ORLANDO — Florida Hospital and Burnham Institute for Medical Research at Lake Nona researcher, Dr. Steven R. Smith, was recently elected to a three-year position as Councilor for The Obesity Society, a leading scientific society dedicated to the study of obesity. His new post begins at the 2009 Annual Scientific Meeting on Oct. 23 in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Smith is an internationally-renowned researcher who focuses on obesity, diabetes and the metabolic origins of cardiovascular disease. He was recently appointed as the executive director of Florida Hospital and Burnham Instituteís Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes in Orlando, Fla. The institute aims to bridge the discoveries in the basic sciences and the application of this knowledge in the clinical care setting. This process is commonly referred to as translational research.
Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas, in 1988. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, in 1991. He subsequently completed a two-year fellowship in clinical endocrinology and metabolism at the Ochsner Clinic and Hospital in New Orleans, La. Most recently, he was a faculty member at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., for 15 years. Dr. Smith has been published in more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, reviews and chapters.
Since 1982, The Obesity Society has been committed to encouraging research on the causes and treatment of obesity, and to keeping the medical community and public informed of new advancements. The Obesity Societyís Annual Scientific Meeting is the largest conference in North America focusing on obesity research, prevention, treatment and management.
Fifth Annual Immunization Update
ORLANDO — In an effort to provide the latest information concerning childhood, adolescent and adult immunizations, the Central Florida Immunization Coalition presents the Fifth Annual Immunization Update. This update will take place Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 8:00am ñ 1:30pm at the Orange County Health Department Central Campus located at 832 West Central Boulevard, Orlando.
Speakers will share their knowledge on a variety of topics including; Influenza H1N1, Rotavirus disease, adolescent immunizations, and seasonal influenza.
"This workshop is a way for the health and medical community to come together and make a significant impact on raising immunization rates and helping protect Central Florida citizens,"said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, Director of the Orange County Health Department and member of the Central Florida Immunization Coalition.
The Central Florida Immunization Coalition invites obstetricians, pediatricians, family practitioners, nurses, nursing students, medical assistants, communicable disease staff, and medical office managers to register to participate in this workshop.

American Hospital Association Chairman Praises Health Central's Quality Initiative
Ocoee — Health Central's Director of Quality Management/Health Information Services, Kathryn A. Deel, was featured recently by the American Hospital Association (AHA) for her role in the hospitalís quality initiative to reduce hospital-acquired urinary track infections. AHA News Now's, September 28,2009 edition, highlighted Health Centralís best practices initiative as a role model for other facilities.
The hospital was selected as the feature called "The Chairman's File." Each week, AHA chairman Tom Priselac focuses on a hospital initiative that is successful in reducing an adverse event for his column, "The Chairman's File". Health Central was celebrated for its success in hospital-acquired urinary tract infection reduction. The Chairman's File is a part of the Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence campaign.
According to the Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence (HPOE) website, HPOE is the AHAís strategic platform that provides field-tested practices, tools, education and other networking resources to accelerate performance improvement in the nationís hospitals. ORMC's Air Care Team soars to impressive 25-year mark as new communications center opens
ORLANDO, Fla. The critical care helicopter transport team at the Orlando Regional Medical Center Level One Trauma Center is officially known as the Air Care Team. The team has responded to community needs for more than two decades and October marks the Air Care Teamís 25th anniversary and the installation of a new communications center to continue managing rescue calls, which is the starting point of the teamís life saving efforts.
Inside the new communications center the Air Care Teamís communications specialists have state-of-the-art tools to perform the critical role of dispatching calls and sharing and receiving information from the medical crew and Level One trauma center. The additional space will allow for increased staffing to meet the communityís growing needs for trauma care.
The communications center manages an average of 260 requests for service and an average of 480 emergency transfer requests calls per month. The Air Cares Teamís communications specialists have undergone specialized training in air ambulance communications and are certified by the National Association of Air-medical Communication Specialists.
The only hospital-based multiple aircraft flight program in the area, the Air Care Team uses three helicopters based in three counties ñ Lake, Osceola and Seminole. Air Care Teamís service area encompasses a 100-mile radius that covers 15 counties including Orange, Brevard, Citrus, Lake, Marion, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia. In its 25 years of service the Air Care Team has treated more than 23,000 patients and flown over 1.4 million miles. The crewís primary scene response calls are for motor vehicle incidents. Other calls include electrical injuries, falls and hospital to hospital transports for acute cardiac and stroke care, and other specialized services provided by Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Omniflight is a leading provider of air medical services throughout the United States. Seminole State faculty attend NLN conference in Philadelphia
SANFORD — Four Nursing program faculty members from Seminole State College of Florida attended the National League for Nursing in Philadelphia Sept. 23-26.
Among the many nursing education topics discussed was the $600,000 gerontology grant funded by John A. Hartford Foundation. Two Seminole State faculty members, Sheron Rowe and Leslie Lorette, have joined a panel of experts recruited by Community College of Philadelphia, which is partnering with the NLN to develop a set of standards for enhancing student expertise in geriatric care.
Local Golfers Hit the Golf Course to Benefit Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute
Orlando — Local golfers hit the golf course for the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute Golf Invitational at Shingle Creek Golf Club on Oct. 9. Teams of four players played a round of golf ìscrambleî to raise awareness and money to help those affected by diabetes.
Approximately 100 players and volunteers attended the event which raised $91,000. All proceeds from this yearís event will directly benefit the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute, which treats more than 30,000 patients with diabetes every year.
