Health Central Implants its First AICD
OCOEE — On May 30, Peter Taylor, M.D. performed the first implant of an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or AICD at Health Central medical center, and has implanted several others since his initial case. This represents great news for our community since patients had to be transported to other hospitals in order to have this surgery done. The enhancement of cardiac services demonstrates the commitment from our physicians and Health Central medical center to bring the latest technologies and treatment options to our community.
An AICD is utilized to monitor the heart and detect an arrhythmia, or abnormal rhythm. Once an arrhythmia is detected, the AICD sends out an electrical current to the heart muscle, shocking the heart back into a normal rhythm. The device can greatly reduce a patient’s risk of having a fatal heart attack.
