Florida Hospital Celebration Health Opens New Patient Tower

Members of the community celebrated the grand opening of the new patient tower at Florida Hospital Celebration Health.  Those in attendance not only took part in the butterfly release, but were a part of the first public tour of the 234,000 sq foot, 62 bed addition to the hospital.  This expansion brings Florida Hospital Celebration Health to a 174 bed facility.

The new patient tower allows Florida Hospital Celebration Health to provide care for the growing population of Osceola County.  The expansion of the emergency department, additional beds and staff will allow for the growing healthcare needs of this community whose population has increased by more than 50 percent over the past decade.  The advanced patient experience technology in the new patient tower, the Global Robotics Institute and the Nicholson Center make Florida Hospital Celebration Health a growing destination for national and international patients willing to travel to receive the very best in health care.

In connection with the Institute for Interactive Patient Care, everything from new patient safety technology to changing ways to communicate with patients about their care could be studied as part of the unit.  The goal is to conduct research on the best practices of patient and family engagement and share those results with other health care institutions for their adoption.

Emergency care is also a major focus of the new patient tower with 30 additional emergency room beds that are designed to allow for increased patient privacy.  A front-stage, back-stage concept allows families access to their loved ones from one side of the room while caregivers are stationed in a central location to have easy access to all the patients and rooms from the opposite side.

New Colorectal Surgical Instrument for Minimally Invasive Option

Florida Hospital colon & rectal surgeons with the Center for Colon and Rectal Surgery have introduced a new surgical technique that allows for significantly less invasive procedures for colon and rectal surgeries. TransAnal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) is the newest cutting-edge surgical technique for the removal of benign polyps and precancerous tumors in the colorectal region. Dr. Matthew Albert, Dr. Sergio Larach, Dr. Sam Atallah and Dr. Teresa H. deBeche-Adams are the only physicians using this sophisticated technique after designing the device with Applied Medical.

The TAMIS device is inserted into the rectum and nearly doubles how far into the body physicians can reach, eliminating the need for an open surgery through the abdomen. Traditional transanal surgery is limited by poor visualization and with difficulty, can only reach seven to eight centimeters into the rectum.  The TAMIS device allows the surgeons to remove lesions up to 18 centimeters into the body.

The principal benefit of the TAMIS procedure and device is in providing a platform to access inside the rectum.  Patients are able to undergo painless outpatient surgery without the need for major abdominal surgery and rectal resection. Patients have an immediate recovery and are left with no scarring.

The TAMIS device also provides a huge financial benefit to hospitals and patients, saving thousands of dollars in surgical costs compared to other tools. In addition, this technique also creates savings by eliminating the costs associated with a five to seven day hospitalization typically seen with abdominal surgery. With less than one minute of set up time, the device is also time efficient and is disposable. The TAMIS device recently received market clearance as well as FDA approval. The TAMIS device or the Gelport path is the newest addition to the Gelport product line from Applied Medical.

Drs. Albert, Larach, and Debeche presented the latest device in May of this year at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) conference, after having worked on the design since 2009.
