Happy New Year!

Lake-Sumter Medical Society is anticipating an exciting New Year with renewed interest, optimism and enthusiasm. The Board of Governors and Executive Director, Carol Millwater, have taken seriously the challenge of creating a strategic plan, focusing on a multi-faceted outline which includes: Organizational – Enhancing the benefits of membership; Marketing – Increasing awareness of the Medical Society county-wide; Financial – Membership and fund raising; Community – Expanding the scope of service to others and seeking partnerships; and Executive – Board Development and recruitment.

Included in the plans for 2009 will be a partnership with the University of Central Florida for job shadowing; a spring fund raising golf tournament to support We Care of Lake County and a newly launched LSMS Scholarship Fund; participating in the FMA temporary housing of medical students; support of the Lake and Sumter Counties Second Harvest; and of course, the annual Expo. Additionally, educational opportunities for physicians and practice management will be provided throughout the year as well as well as participation in the FMA and AMA annual meetings.

Membership Drive

The Membership Renewal Drive continues into the New Year and members are reminded to take care of this annual obligation. Checks can be sent directly to the LSMS at P. O. Box 1578, Mount Dora, FL 32756, or through the Lake Sumter Medical Society Web site. Remember also, that the Florida Medical Association dues have increased slightly, to $420, and though membership is not required, it is encouraged. Additionally, members are urged to invite colleagues to join the Medical Society and can contact the Medical Society office (352-483-4748 or cmillwater@lakesumter.org) for follow-up calls and visits.

Health Insurance Trust

The LSMS is proud to announce the reopening of their hugely popular Health Insurance Trust for physicians and their employees. The Plan was reopened on January 1, 2009 following informational seminars held at four Lake and Sumter County hospitals. Interested physicians should contact the LSMS office to investigate the possibility of coverage. This opportunity will close on March 31, 2009.
