COVER FLORIDA - Much to be desired...

According to FMA President, Stephen West, Cover Florida has shortcomings. In a recent message he explained that, "Cover Florida is 'guarantee issued,' which means applicants cannot be turned away; however, Cover Florida is not for everyone. Though many could benefit from the program, Cover Florida will likely not satisfy the needs of all uninsured patients in Florida, particularly many with the greatest needs. Cover Florida is limited, and in fact offers more restrictions than plans in Florida's group or individual insurance markets. It remains a viable option for those who are already in stable health and want access to preventive care, as well as a buffer in the unfortunate event of necessary hospitalization. For those with current medical conditions who need consistent care, Cover Florida currently leaves much to be desired."

Though Cover Florida is not ideal, it expands access to preventive and specialty care. For all of its shortcomings, Cover Florida promises to expand important health benefits to patients who would otherwise have no access to care.
