Red Flag RuleDo you have processes in place to prevent identity theft and secure patient information? On May 1, 2009, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will enforce a Red Flag requirement that lenders (in this case, hospitals and other healthcare organizations which extend credit or otherwise meet FTC criteria) implement a formal written policy that outlines how they intend to detect, mitigate, and prevent identity theft.
Though the AMA fought the FTC, promoting the position that physicians are not creditors, the FTC continues to assert that physicians are creditors and must develop and implement written identity theft prevention programs for their practices by May 1, 2009 in order to be compliant with the Red Flag Rule.
Contact the LSMS office for experts who can guide you through this added compliance issue and check out

Seminole County Medical Society
Seminole County Medical Society goes to Tallahassee! The Seminole County Medical Society Legislative Committee traveled to Tallahassee March 17th and 18th to meet with local legislators. This trip was a great opportunity to observe and be part of the legislative process, to help SCMS build closer relationships with its legislators, and to help lobby for the SCMS top legislative priorities which include: increasing Medicaid reimbursement to Medicare levels, additional managed care reforms, expert witness reforms, and securing full funding for the UCF Medical School.
Volunteer OpportunitiesWe have all seen by now the effects of the economy on our country and our local community. In fact, we all probably know someone who has lost their job due to these hard times and is struggling to get by. This is definitely being felt by local organizations which provide needed healthcare to members of our community who have little or no insurance. With the increasing need for supplies and staff, many of our local organizations have to regretfully turn down patients. The Seminole County Medical Society has posted information for local physicians who would like to volunteer their services, even just once a month, to better the health of our community. Please visit the society website at www.scmsociety.com to view a listing of organizations where you can volunteer.
