Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and a leading cause of disability worldwide, according the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Currently, 15 million adults suffer with painful osteoarthritis of the knee, resulting in a compromised quality of life.
The opportunity for early intervention is important because osteoarthritis of the knee is one of the five leading causes of disability among the elderly, and the risk for disability attributable to knee osteoarthritis is as great as that attributable to cardiovascular disease.
MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing is an innovative treatment option for patients living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. This minimally invasive procedure facilitates rapid recovery, a shorter hospital stay and a knee that feels more natural post-operatively. And for the patient that means relief from pain and a rapid return to daily activities.
Through its innovative use of technology, MAKOplasty® takes partial knee resurfacing to a new level of precision. When performing MAKOplasty®, doctors utilize MAKO's surgeon-interactive tactile robotic arm and 3-D virtual visualization system.
This system provides the surgeon a pre-surgical plan that details the technique for bone preparation and implant positioning using a CT scan of the patient's knee. During the procedure, the system creates a three-dimensional live-action, virtual view of the patient's bone surface and correlates the image to the pre-programmed surgical plan. As the surgeon uses the robotic arm, its tactile, acoustic and visual feedback limits the bone preparation to the diseased areas and provides for more optimal implant positioning and placement.
So imagine lining up every putt perfectly – and sinking it every time. That's the confidence you get with the MAKOplasty® partial knee resurfacing procedure.
This year, Florida Hospital DeLand will be the first hospital in Central Florida to introduce MAKOplasty® , and Dr Mark Hollmann will be the only Orthopaedic Surgeon to perform this procedure.

Is it for Your Patients?
The decision on whether or not to have a MAKOplasty® procedure is an important one, and only an orthopedic surgeon can adequately diagnose and determine if it is right for your patients. If your patients ask if MAKOplasty® is a good treatment option for them, it may be if they have early to mid-stage osteoarthritis of the knee or are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Knee pain with activity, usually on the inner knee
- Start up knee pain or stiffness when activities are initiated from a sitting position
- Failure to respond to non-surgical treatments or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication
