Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic

When a patient hears the words "suspicious lesion" after a diagnostic mammogram, the statement is typically followed by an explanation of risk factors, the necessity for further evaluation, a bewildering array of treatment options, therapy side effects and cosmetic implications. A comprehensive plan of care for management of patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer needs to integrate opinions from the surgeon, medical and radiation oncologist. Now there is a place in Central Florida, where patients have the opportunity to meet with cancer specialists in one convenient appointment, receive additional diagnostic testing, and receive a thorough review of their case and get a recommended treatment plan.

A multidisciplinary approach compliments the Breast Care Program at the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute - East Orlando. Therapy for Breast cancer is evolving and our program is designed to offer a complete solution for patients seeking the opinions of experts regarding their cancer diagnosis, treatment options and what they and their family can expect. This intense collaborative review gives patients the very best insight into their condition and also expedites their care and treatment.

This approach brings the expertise of breast surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, and additional cancer care resources to the Cancer Specialists Clinic at Florida Hospital East Orlando.

The Breast Cancer Program Team includes:

  • Medical Oncologist

  • Radiation Oncologist

  • Breast Surgeons

  • Breast Care Coordinator

Together, the physicians have an opportunity to provide expert opinions regarding the extent of surgery and incorporation of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy into the plan of care.

The Breast Care Coordinator, who is a registered nurse, supporting the physician team, is available to help patients through their breast cancer treatment process. Complimentary, tailored services offered by the Breast Care Coordinator include:
  • Comprehensive nursing assessment and support

  • Rapid scheduling of appointments, consultations and procedures

  • Assistance with coordination of providers and procedures

  • Symptom management

  • Ongoing education and disease information

Recognizing the period of time between a women's diagnosis and the initiation of treatment was unacceptably drawn-out, was the catalysts this clinic was formed around. The multidisciplinary approach saves 37 days from diagnosis to treatment, which helps alleviate some of the anxiety patients face with a breast cancer diagnosis.

The clinic also provides access to clinical trials provided through the NSABP (National surgical adjuvant breast and bowel project) and CALGB (Cancer and leukemia group B) programs which are nationally renowned.

The Cancer Specialists Clinic is designed for women at high risk for breast cancer (family history of breast cancer), newly diagnosed with breast cancer, or women facing cancer without yet having a decisive treatment plan. Access to genetic testing and counseling will be available as well.

Physicians can refer their patients to the Cancer Specialists Clinic by calling the Breast Care Coordinator at 407-303-2514. Following the appointment, the patient will leave with an understanding of the roles of the medical oncologist, radiation oncologist and breast surgeon, as well her options clearly spelled out for her.
