The Seminole County Medical Society (SCMS) held its Quarterly Membership Meeting on May 18 at Heathrow Country Club. Dr. Collins of Sanford-Burnham Research Institute gave a fascinating talk on some of their recent research as well as her studies on fat cells.  In addition, the SCMS Foundation awarded its 2010 Scholarship Awards. This year's winners are attending the University of Florida and Yale University in the fall. It was a great meeting overall and we're already looking forward to the September 21 meeting at Florida Hospital Altamonte where Madelyn Butler, MD, of the Florida Medical Association will be speaking.  The theme of this meeting is going to be "The South" so expect some Southern cuisine and music for your enjoyment!  Call the SCMS Office at 407.804.9535 to RSVP today or email them at scms@scmsociety.com. The cost is $35 for non-member physicians and free for members.

 

It is because of our members that the medical society is able to be a strong voice for physicians in local and state government.  In addition, as a member of the society you're able to build great relationships with other physicians in the community each time you see one another at medical society functions. Speaking of representation, the Florida Medical Association (FMA) Annual Meeting is right around the corner!  Each year at the FMA Annual Meeting, medical societies from around the state send delegates from their membership (that are also members of the FMA) to represent them in the House of Delegates.  It is these delegates that vote on the resolutions brought forward by the FMA and medical societies that ultimately help to shape the face of medicine in Florida. This year, SCMS is allotted 5 delegate spots at the annual meeting.  The FMA is also offering some great CME courses during the weekend that you'll want to take advantage of, if you're a member.  The meeting is scheduled for August 12-15 and is being held at the Hilton Bonnet Creek in Orlando.
