Florida Hospital Transplant Institute Welcomes Dr. Scott Silvestry

Florida Hospital is pleased to announce Dr. Scott Silvestry, a cardiothoracic surgeon, has joined the Cardiovascular Institute’s Advanced Heart Failure and Thoracic Transplant programs to offer lifesaving treatment options for heart failure patients.

Dr. Silvestry specializes in implanting left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), a pump that supports weak hearts and improves function and blood flow. He brings a minimally invasive approach to the procedure, which is being used increasingly as a bridge to heart transplant and long-term therapy.

Prior to joining Florida Hospital, Dr. Silvestry held various positions at Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, including associate professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery and surgical director of surgical cardiac transplantation & mechanical circulatory assist. Under his leadership, Washington University School of Medicine’s LVAD and transplant program rapidly became one of the nation’s busiest. Dr. Silvestry has authored and coauthored groundbreaking research and served in leadership roles at organizations within his field. Dr. Silvestry has lectured nationally and internationally, and is recognized as an international innovator of surgical technique and applications of mechanical assist technology. 

Originally from New York City, Dr. Silvestry completed undergraduate studies at Cornell University, and attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed a residency, fellowship, and advanced fellowship in cardiac transplantation and ventricular assist devices at Duke University Medical Center.
