Borys Mascarenhas, MD, was recently honored as Volunteer Physician of the Year by We Care of Lake County at their Starry Night Gala. Dr. Mascarenhas was joined by family and friends as he received a celestial star, registered in his name, as a symbol of their appreciation.

In his words of thanks, he talked about the legacy of his father, who was also a surgeon and humanitarian, adding that he accepted the award in his honor.

The physicians and staff of Mid-Florida Surgical Associates were also honored as Volunteer Practice of the Year, with a star registered in their name as well. Dr. Chris Johnson accepted the award for the practice, noting that their team was honored and humbled by the recognition.

We Care of Lake County was started by the physicians of Lake-Sumter Medical Society in 1994 and continues to be the flagship of the organization. They provide free specialty medical care to low-income, uninsured and homeless adults in Lake County. As a volunteer physician, doctors receive Sovereign Immunity and CME hours.
