The Physicians Society of Central Florida Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Physicians Society of Central Florida and focuses on medical education within our community through scholarships to local medical schools and also to high school students who demonstrate extraordinary scholarship, integrity, and a strong interest in science. The PSCF Foundation Physician Wellness Program provides completely confidential counseling free of charge to PSCF physicians to help them get through these tough times and back to caring for their patients.
The Physicians Society of Central Florida (PSCF) Foundation has been instrumental in developing future physician leaders for our community through scholarships provided to medical students at the FSU College of Medicine and donations to the UCF Medical School. In addition, the PSCF Foundation awards two scholarships each year to two local high school students who are going on to pursue careers in medicine and the sciences. These are known as our Dr. Willie Newman and Dr. Luis Perez Scholarships.
Physician Wellness Program
Physician burnout and its complications are the number one threat to a physician’s medical career. It may lead to lower levels of patient care, more medical errors, and higher rates of staff turnover, disruptive behavior, substance abuse, and even suicide. More than half of all physicians report signs of burnout.
Physicians spend almost one quarter of their time on non-clinical paperwork and the majority of physicians have no time to see new patients or take on more duties. This coupled with lack of respect from employers, colleagues, or staff, lack of autonomy, and increasing computerization of practice (EHRs) are all contributing factors to physician burnout. In a 2018 report by Medscape, a physician’s job contributes more to their depression than their finances, family, relationships, or health. Furthermore, the report shows physicians’ depression affects their patient care in many cases.
As a result, a number of resources have been created to address physician wellness, including mindfulness seminars, yoga classes, and more. Unfortunately, physicians have been reticent to seek the type of professional care they need to address their signs of stress or burnout. Many physicians are unwilling to admit that they need help or believe that seeking help is a sign of weakness. Furthermore, the Board of Medicine asks about seeking mental health treatment during the re-licensure process and many physicians fear seeking professional help will negatively impact this process. In addition, Employee Assistance Programs are run by the Human Resources department in many instances and physicians fear an impact on their employment status for accessing care.
That is why the PSCF Foundation has created the PSCF Physician Wellness Program. This program is completely confidential. Calls are handled by a professional answering service out of state while physician information is sent directly to the counselor and never to the medical society. In addition, the program creates no electronic medical record. Finally, the Physician Wellness Program is self-referral only, and free for society members.

COVID Relief For The PSCF Physician Wellness Program
Friday, November 6, 2020
The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken physicians’ sense of order and control. Such disruptions may lead to substantial stress in the short term and higher risk for burnout over the long term. This pandemic poses unique, long-term stressors and risks to physicians’ physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
That is why now more than ever it’s important for our organization to provide a Physician Wellness Program that can accommodate all physicians within our community who need to use this service so that they can continue to effectively serve the patients of our community.
In an effort to ensure the PSCF Foundation can continue to cover the cost of physician visits with counselors through this program, the funds raised from the 2020 PSCF Foundation Virtual Wine Tasting Fundraiser will go towards the PSCF Physician Wellness Program. Physician members of the PSCF will be entitled to up to four free sessions with a counselor each year as part of this program thanks to the generosity and support of our community partners and donors who participate in our Virtual Wine Tasting Fundraiser.
