Nemours Children’s Health has recruited Angelo Alberto Leto Barone, M.D. Dr. Leto Barone is a surgeon who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery in children. Leto Barone will also have an appointment at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.

A career in medicine came easily to Dr. Leto Barone, whose parents are both physicians. In his native Santo Stefano Quisquina, a municipality of the Italian region of Sicily, Leto Barone recalls that a 6-year-old neighbor fell down and sought medical help from his parents at their home office, where they treated patients. As the only one at home, 8 year-old Leto Barone felt the need to help and knew what to do: he disinfected the area, and dressed the neighbor’s wound.

Leto Barone earned his medical degree at the University of Palermo Medical School, where he also completed a plastic and reconstructive surgery residency. He went on to perform research at the University of Southern California, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, as well as at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Leto Barone was then accepted to continue his training at the combined Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery residency program, where he completed his residency and a Burn Fellowship in summer 2021, before heading to the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for a Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery fellowship.

“Dr. Barone will add to the skills of the team of Nemours surgical specialists who utilize their extensive training to benefit our patients,” said Dr. Adela Casas-Melley, Chair of Surgery at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida. He will play a key role in the new Nemours Ear, Hearing and Communications Center (EHCC), launching soon.

At Nemours, Leto Barone looks forward to working on ear reconstruction and using technology to improve the patient experience. “Nemours is an inspiring place with a visionary outlook for surgery and ear reconstruction,” said Leto Barone.

He is also interested in thew whole spectrum of pediatric plastic surgery care, including cleft care, facial differences, and less known areas such migraine surgery for children with traumatic brain injuries or congenital ear differences. In fact, Dr. Leto Barone holds a patent for a medical device, AuryzoN™ that aids surgeons in facial cartilage reconstruction, including ear, nose and more.
