While our organization reflects on some of the missed opportunities related to health care policy that did not pass during the 2017 Florida Legislative Session, the Legislature did pass a series of health care bills addressing important issues for Floridians. Over the coming weeks we will highlight some of those bills that passed and their anticipated effective dates.

This week we focus on House Bill 589 which broadens the transparency tools available for Floridians concerning prescription drug pricing.

HB 589 increases the number of prescription drugs that must be posted to MyFloridaRx, from 100 to 300. The increased number of drugs listed on website will make the product more robust for the public.
Additionally, the bill codifies the current practice by which prescription drug pricing information is reported to the Agency for Health Care Administration, from quarterly to monthly. As a result, patients who query MyFloridaRx will have access to more timely pricing information for more prescription drugs.
HB 589 was sponsored by Representative Clay Yarborough from Jacksonville. The Senate bill sponsor was Senator Aaron Bean who is also from Jacksonville. The bill will take effect upon being signed into law.
