OCMS Controlled Substance Prescribing Course

Joshua D. Lenchus, DO, RPh, FACP, SFHM holds a pharmacy degree from the University of Florida, and graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Subsequently, he worked as a hospitalist for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he held the rank of associate professor of medicine, anesthesiology, and radiology. From 2007-16, he also served as an associate program director for the internal medicine residency. Currently, he is the regional medical officer for Broward Health Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Lenchus is incredibly involved, serving as a leader in organized medicine at multiple levels, including as President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, Speaker of the House for the Florida Medical Association, past Regent and current Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine. He has a passion for health policy, serves on public policy committees, and has presented this topic in a variety of venues, from student groups to corporations.


Mariel S. Kagan, RN, MSN, JD, CPHRM, LHRM, CHC, CPHC, CCEP, Patient Safety Risk Manager II, The Doctors Company.

Kagen's educational achievements include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN); and a Juris Doctorate (JD). She is an experienced registered nurse and attorney. Ms. Kagan holds national certifications in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM), Healthcare Compliance (CHC), and Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC); and she is a Certified Compliance and Ethics Professional (CCEP). Ms. Kagan is a Licensed Healthcare Risk Manager (LHRM) in Florida. She is an experienced Chief Legal Officer, General Counsel, Enterprise Risk Manager, Compliance Officer, and Privacy and Security Officer. She has established legal, risk management, compliance, and privacy and security programs across the nation.

Ms. Kagan has more than 35 years of experience as a nurse; and 30 years of experience as an attorney, working with physicians, dentists, academic medical centers, hospitals, physician and dental practices, health care organizations and insurance carriers. She develops and presents seminars and educational programs for healthcare executives, boards, dentists, physicians, dental and medical office personnel, and allied health care practitioners. She has served as an Adjunct Professor and Guest Lecturer at Graduate and Undergraduate programs in colleges and universities in several states.
